A purely personal list of films that I found unexpectedly good for various reasons.

1) CUBE: A group of strangers awake in in a maze made up of cubic rooms, some of which contain deadly booby-traps. They try to navigate their way out, while discovering unexpected things about themselves........

A genuine classic, made on a tiny budget and basically, on one set. It is taut, brilliantly written and acted, and packed full of invention and ideas.

2) THE THIRTEENTH WARRIOR: An exiled Arab poet and scholar finds himself among a party of Norse warriors, on a quest to save a village from a dark and powerful foe.....

Famous for being one of the biggest cinematic flops of all time, I actually think this is a damn fine film. The elements of culture-clash are handled very well, and Antonio Banderas is great in the lead role.

3) THE INFIDEL: A British Muslim finds his life turned upside down when he finds out that he was actually born Jewish.......

A genuinely funny film and an uplifting one without being in any way worthy or preachy. An unexpected joy.

4) MOON: An astronaut, alone on an industrial moonbase, makes a disturbing discovery about himself after an accident on the lunar surface.......

Just a brilliant sci-fi concept. Sam Rockwell is mesmerising in the lead role(s), and the concept is so disturbing, because its so plausible.

5) GRAN TORINO:  A Korean war veteran finds himself unexpectedly drawn in to the lives of his Asian neighbours........

One of Clint Eastwood's best films I think, and that is very high praise indeed. A wonderful exploration of character, alienation, and family.
